::Insert polite salutation here::
I left Lost Wages, Nevada this morning around 9:00. I had a good time there but decided to leave a day early so I wouldn't be tempted to gamble. I was satisfied that I only lost a little over a hundred dollars. After leaving Vegas it was about a 35 mile drive to Boulder City, Nevada. My first stop of the day was at the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. This bridge carries US93 over the Colorado River at the Nevada-Arizona state lines. It took over five years to build and opened to traffic on October 19, 2010. You have to walk up this hill to get onto the bridge. In my case I maneuvered my scooter up the numerous switchbacks.
The bridge was the first concrete-steel composite deck arch bridge built in the United States, and incorporates the widest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere. At 890 feet above the Colorado River, it is the second highest bridge in the United States after the Royal Gorge Bridge.
As I was proceeding out onto the bridge I noticed that there was quite a nice view to my left.
This is of course Hoover Dam. This was a better view than I got from my scenic flight over it back on December 26, 2006. The picture below was taken from the center of the bridge looking down on the dam.
Much to my surprise they had a dam tour that was handicap accessible. So I took my scooter down to the base of the dam and through the tunnels.
Pictured below is the power plant on the Nevada side.
Below is the dam as seen from the observation deck. The dam is 726 feet high.
My next job was to "walk" across the dam. I made a complete circle coming back on the opposite side.
As usual the weather was perfect. In the picture below that is the observation deck where I just was on the right and that is the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge dead center above the Colorado River. Before the bridge was completed the highway went over the top of the dam. All the hairpin turns were very dangerous.
Below is an interesting shot from the center of the dam looking straight down.
I know what your thinking about now, too many dam pictures. This is only a very small percentage of what I took.
I now had left Nevada and was in Arizona. I switched to the other side and headed back toward Nevada.
On this side you get a nice view of Lake Mead, what's left of it. Water level is the lowest in history and getting worse every year.
These are the water intake towers.
I had planned to spend an hour or two here. Instead it was over four hours. I had a blast. Below is a final look of the area after you climb the hill on the Arizona side.
It was only about an eighty mile drive into Kingman, Arizona after my dam business was done. I checked into a La Quinta Inn and got me some dinner from the Culver's across the street.
Now I am preparing this email for your reading pleasure. Be sure to check out the web site today, there is a nice video of the dam. Thanks for reading to the bottom.
