MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON APRIL 18, 2022
Hello,

I just completed my fourth complete week of being on the road. This morning I left Lake Havasu. I had to do about fifty miles of backtracking this morning as I traveled back to Needles, California. From Needles I headed north to Bullhead City, Arizona. From Bullhead City you can look across the Colorado River and see the casinos in Laughlin. I stayed at the Riverside Hotel back in 1997.

Laughlin has eight different resorts, with nearly 9,000 rooms, all close together right along the beautiful Colorado River.

Laughlin was named for Don Laughlin who purchased the southern tip of Nevada in 1964. He opened what would become the Riverside Resort, and later wanted to call the community Riverside or Casino, but the post office opted for Laughlin instead. The city's population is currently around 8700 people.

Just north of Laughlin I visited the Davis Dam. This dam spans the Colorado River in Pyramid Canyon 67 miles downstream from Hoover Dam. It stretches across the border between Arizona and Nevada.

I continued my north bound journey for about seventy miles. It was at this point I once again veered off the highway to venture out in the middle of nowhere to see a ghost town. Below I'm coming down the hill into the Nelson Ghost Town.

Located just five miles away from the Colorado River, Nelson was known as El Dorado by the Spaniards who discovered it.

The town was the site of one of the first major gold strikes in Nevada and one of the biggest mining booms in state history. Gold and silver were discovered here around 1859.

In its heyday, the area established a reputation for being rough and lawless. During the Civil War, deserters from both the Union and Confederate armies would wander here, hoping that such an isolated location would be the last place military authorities would look for them.

Nelson is located along Nevada State Route 165, about 8 miles southeast of its junction with U.S. Route 95. Route 165 continues east 5 miles to a dead end at Nelsons Landing on the Colorado River. This area is an official "dark sky" area.

From here it was a fifty mile drive into Las Vegas. They wanted to charge me $50 to get into my hotel room before 4:00 so I had about 90 minutes to kill before heading to the hotel. So I went up the Stratosphere Tower. Below is a picture of downtown Las Vegas from the top of the tower.

And below is looking down the Las Vegas Strip from 1149 feet up.

It was now after 4:00 so I checked into my hotel, the LINQ. I selected this hotel because it was centrally located on the strip, easy to get in and out with my scooter and it was cheap. By the time I got settled it was after 6:00 and I was starving. It had been more than 24 hours since I last ate. I got me some In-N-Out. I didn't have far to journey since there is one on the Promenade just outside my hotel. You can see it on the right in the picture below.

I was going to go see the fountains at Bellagio's after I ate my dinner. But I'm old and ready to call it a night so I'll do that tomorrow. This is sunset out my hotel room window tonight.

I'll sign off for today and leave you with one last picture from my hotel window.
