MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON APRIL 10, 2022
Hello folks,

I began my day by leaving my hotel in El Centro, California at 7:10am. While it gets quite warm here in the afternoons the evenings and mornings are quite nice. Weather this morning was sunny as usual, about 60 degrees. I had a 126 mile drive to San Diego. It was a pleasant drive on Interstate 8 through some scenic hills. My first stop was forty miles west of El Centro at the Desert View Tower.

The tower is at 3,000 feet in elevation, in the In-Ko-Pah Mountains. I was here way before operating hours, so the picture below was taken from ground level.

I continued west on Interstate 8, unfortunately about twenty miles outside San Diego the skies clouded completely over. And it stayed that way until mid afternoon. Forecast said it was supposed to be mostly sunny all day. I arrived on the Point Loma peninsula at 10:00. It was a very pleasant visit despite the gloomy weather. Below is the Cabrillo National Monument.

From the monument I rode my scooter up to the old lighthouse.

Below is a picture I took along the way looking down on the Cabrillo National Monument where I had just been. That's the visitor center to the left of the flag and if you look real close you can just barely see the San Diego skyline through the clouds.

I made my way up to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. It is no longer in operation and is now a museum.

Around the other side of the lighthouse you get a nice view of the Pacific Ocean.

The gloomy weather ruined my pictures but I had a lot of fun out here anyway. Below is looking out across San Diego Bay. Again you can almost see the skyline of San Diego.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse stood watch over the entrance to San Diego Bay for 36 years. At dusk on November 15, 1855, the light keeper climbed the winding stairs and lit the light for the first time. What seemed to be a good location 422 feet above sea level, however, had a serious flaw. Fog and low clouds often obscured the light. On March 23, 1891, the light was extinguished and the keeper moved to a new lighthouse location closer to the water at the tip of the Point.

The New Point Loma Lighthouse occupies a stunning natural setting which you can see in my picture below.

It was so beautiful here today, I can ony imagine how spectacular it must be on a clear day.

On my way out I stopped briefly at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Next it was about a fifteen mile drive to Coronado Island. I spent a couple hours here admiring the many views of downtown San Diego.

It was still mostly cloudy but the sun did peak through every now and again.

Below is a picture of the Coronado Bridge that I had to drive over to get here and will have to drive over again when I leave.

Lots of people out here enjoying their Sunday. Including me.

Next it was back across the Coronado Bridge and in to downtown San Diego. I checked into my hotel, the SpringHill Suites.

I have a spectacular corner room looking out over San Diego Bay. Directly under my room are two docked cruise ships. Below is the Norwegian Jewel.

After I got settled at the hotel I went out and explored the Embarcadero. Weather had improved and it was now mostly sunny. Below is The Kiss (Unconditional Surrender). It was very crowed here. There was never a time that there wasn't people in front of it. You can see the USS Midway behind it.

Right next to that statue was the Bob Hope Memorial. I was able to get a picture of that sans people, although it took a while. Again that's the Midway behind the statues.

I continued my stroll down the Embarcadero until I got to Seaport Village. Below is a picture from there. Notice the bird in flight.

I got me some dinner from the San Diego Burger Company at Seaport Village and took it back to the hotel. They wrapped everything in foil and it was hot and delicious when I got it back to the hotel. I ate my dinner from my room as I watched the two cruise ships sail out of the port.

It was a really fun day.

Until tomorrow,

Tim
