Hello everyone,
After two months at home following my last trip it was time to hit the road again today. I left home this morning at sunrise and started heading west. Weather was beautiful this morning, sunny and nice and cool. I made two very quick stops in Indiana. The first was in Crawfordsville at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
And the second was in Covington at the less than photogenic Fountain County Court House.
From Covington I drove nonstop across the state of Illinois to Hannibal, Missouri. The temperatures were rising and no longer cool when I got here. My first stop was along the Riverfront. Below is a Mark Twain statue along the Mississippi River.
I got here just in time for the 11:00am departure on the Mark Twain Riverboat.
It was an hour long cruise on the Mississippi River. We passed the Mark Twain Memorial Lighthouse. Since you have to climb about 250 steps to get up there this will be as close as I get to that.
Below is us heading back into Hannibal at the end of the cruise. The bridge on the right is Interstate 72 that brought me here from Illinois.
Below is a picture of Lover's Leap from the cruise.
And after the cruise was over I drove up to Lover's Leap and below is a picture of that. You get a very nice elevated view of Hannibal and the Mississippi River from up there.
There are several nice murals here in town. Below is my favorite.
I headed to the north side of town and Riverview Park. There is a statue of Mark Twain up there.
And below is a picture of what Mark Twain is looking at, a nice view of the Mississippi River.
Next it was back into town where I fired up the ole scooter and explored the historic district. Below is Mark Twain's Boyhood Home.
And below is a closer look at the famous fence.
Across the street from his boyhood home is Mark Twain's father's law office.
Next to the law office is the Becky Thatcher Home.
It was now a very hot afternoon, over 90 degrees. I continued my exploration of Hannibal with a stroll down Main Street.
Below is another view of Main Street.
Standing at the end of Main Street is the Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn Statue.
By this time I was tired and sweating like a pig, so I checked into my hotel which was located right across the street. I'm spending the night at the Best Western here in Hannibal's historic district. I was going to get my dinner from the Mark Twain Dinette across the street from my hotel, but they are apparently closed on Wednesday. So I got my dinner from a very poorly run KFC instead.
Today's email wasn't too descriptive because it is late and I want to go to bed. I spent way too much time editing the Hannibal video and time got away from me. This hotel has the world's SLOWEST internet connection. So I'll just say goodnight.
