Hello everybody,
I began my day in Hannibal, Missouri. I spent the day along the Mississippi River in three states: Missouri, Illinois and Iowa. I crossed the river a total of six times today. My first stop was in Bicentennial Park in Quincy, Illinois. Below is the Bayview Bridge crossing the Mississippi River.
It was nice and pleasant this morning before the temperatures increased. From the Quincy waterfront I proceeded to Washington Park in downtown. I love the historic old building in the picture below which is across from Washington Park. This bank was built in 1892.
Inside Washington Park there is a statue commemorating one of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates which was held here in Quincy on October 13, 1858.
I proceeded north along the Mississippi River from Quincy. Below is a picture of Illinois State Highway 96 along the river.
My next stop was in Nauvoo, Illinois. Historic Nauvoo is a cultural landscape that interprets the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located in Nauvoo, Illinois, from 1839 to 1846. Under the prophetic leadership of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, Latter-day Saints worked together during these years to build a faith-based community and a temple overlooking the Mississippi River. There are dozens of preserved buildings here.
The temple is very pretty perched high above all the historic buildings below.
Below is the equestrian Statue of Joseph & Hyrum Smith across from the Nauvoo Temple.
The town of Nauvoo only has about a thousand people living there.
From Nauvoo is was about fifteen miles to Fort Madison, Iowa.
Below is Old Fort Madison.
Historic Old Fort Madison, an active military outpost from 1808 to 1813, acted as a trading post between the US Army and Native Americans. Historic Old Fort Madison was the first permanent U.S. military fortification on the Upper Mississippi. Below is the inside of the fort.
It was at about this time that I was tired because I didn't sleep well last night. My back was hurting and my feet were on fire as usual. I was also sweating like a pig in the 90 degree heat. I asked myself, why am I doing this? I really enjoy planning my trips and composing the web site and videos after I get home. But due to current circumstances the actual traveling part is more pain than pleasure. So I have decided to come home and cancel the rest of the trip. I made one last stop in Burlington, Iowa on the way to my hotel.
I'm spending the night at a Fairfield Inn in Galesburg, Illinois. I got my dinner from a Taco John's just down the road. Food was very good. Mush better than Taco Bell.
Tonight at the hotel the internet went out and was out until the wee small hours of the morning. So much for getting started on canceling all those reservations.
