Dan and I began our 1982 summer vacation by flying to
Boston, Massachusetts. We spent the night in Cambridge,
just across the Charles River from Boston.
We awoke the next morning to a lot of rain.
Our first stop was a soggy visit to Salem, Mass.
Next we headed north on I-93 into New Hampshire.
Pictured above is the state capitol of New Hampshire
in Concord. It is the country's oldest statehouse.
We spent the night in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
The weather was much better when we awoke the next day.
We spent the day visiting the numerous tourist
attractions in the beautiful White Mountains of New
Hampshire. Pictured above is the Lost River Gorge.
Pictured above is "The Profile," also known as the
Old Man of the Mountains and the Great Stone Face.
Located 1200 feet above Profile Lake in Franconia
Notch, the 40-foot-high head is formed by
five separate ledges.
We rode the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway as it
made a 2022-foot vertical ascent in five minutes.
From the Summit Observation Platform we enjoyed a
spectacular view of the mountains and valleys.
Next it was into Vermont where we made a brief
stop in Montpelier to see the state capitol.
We stayed in Burlington, Vermont, where we took a
late afternoon ferry ride across Lake Champlain.
After getting off the ferry in Port Kent, New York,
we made a quick visit to the Ausable Chasm.
We enjoyed a beautiful sunset on our ferry ride
back to Burlington for the night.
Next we enjoyed a beautiful drive across
Vermont through the beautiful Green Mountains.
In east central Vermont we stopped at the scenic
Quechee Gorge, "Vermont's Little Grand Canyon,"
located 10 miles southwest of White River Junction.
Next it was back to Boston for a couple nights.
Pictured above is the view from the 50th floor
of the Prudential Center in downtown Boston.
We paid a visit to Providence, Rhode Island. The
state capitol building there is an architectural
wonder: it's the second largest marble dome in the
world (after St. Peter's in Rome) and the first
unsupported one built in the United States.
Newport, Rhode Island is best known for its
magnificent estates. One is pictured above
One of our last stops was Plymouth Rock. Located
in historic Plymouth, Massachusetts. This is
where the Pilgrams first set foot in 1620.
