Hello folks,
I bid you greetings from a very wet Chattanooga, Tennessee. I actually slept in and had some breakfast at the motel this morning. With a light rain falling at 10:30 I set out to explore a little more of Chattanooga. My first stop was at the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway.
The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway is a funicular railway leading to the top of Lookout Mountain from the historic St. Elmo neighborhood of Chattanooga. Passengers are transported from St. Elmo's Station at the base, to Point Park at the mountain summit, which overlooks the city. The railway is approximately one mile in length. It has a maximum grade of 72.7%, making it one of the world's steepest passenger railways. Below is a picture from the ride up.
There really wasn't much of a point in going up the mountain today. There was nothing to see in the bleak weather. But I had a day to kill and this is one of the most popular attractions in the city. As you can see above the car was full even though it was raining. In the picture below you can see the car at the top of the mountain.
I rode back down on the very next trip after about twenty minutes on top. I then drove over to the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel. By the time I got over there it was raining quite a bit harder.
From 1909 to 1970, all trains to points south passed through Chattanooga's famous terminal, which was designed by a 24-year-old architectural student from New York. Trains stopped running in 1970; but the terminal was saved from demolition in 1973 by a group of local investors. The 1909 station, with its magnificent 85-foot free-standing dome, is the focal point of this 24-acre historical property that features exceptional accommodations, spirited dining venues and family fun. Below is a representative old steam locomotive on display at Terminal Station.
I spent about an hour walking around over there. I then drove over to Ruby Falls. This is a cavern with an underground waterfall. I wanted to do this. It would be a good place to visit on a rainy day. Others must have thought so too, the parking lot was packed. But I didn't think my feet could handle the walk that it would entail. So I settled for taking a picture of the outside from the car in the pouring rain and then returned to my motel.
That completed my day. There are still a few more days to go before I get back home.
