MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON APRIL 22, 2022
Hello,

Well, my string of 29 good days of weather was probably broken today as today's weather was far from perfect. The wind was blowing so hard throughout the entire day that I had trouble opening the door to my car. When I woke up in Flagstaff this morning it was 44 degrees, completely overcast and graupel was falling from the sky. Graupel is a new word for me. I have never heard it before. But that is how the tv weather lady described this morning's weather.

I didn't see any ghosts at my hotel last night. I left my haunted hotel around 9:00 this morning. My first stop of the day was only 14.3 miles east of Flagstaff at the Walnut Canyon National Monument. When I set out on my stroll down the Canyon Rim Trail it was completely overcast with a very light rain falling. Less than ten minutes later I took this picture.

Although still very windy the sun continued to shine until the late afternoon. Below is Walnut Canyon. The canyon rim elevation is 6,690 feet; the canyon's floor is 350 feet lower. You can see the San Francisco Mountains in the upper right corner of the picture. This is where the awful Tunnel Fire is burning, only 3% contained. Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument that I visited in 2017 (http://timvp.com/arizona/apr15.html) is now gone. Every inch of it burned.

Along the trails you can imagine life within Walnut Canyon, while visiting actual pueblos and walking in the steps of those who came before.

My next journey was probably not one of my better decisions. I drove 35 miles to Grand Falls of the Little Colorado River. The last nine miles of that journey was in the Navajo Nation on the worst unpaved "road" I have ever driven on in my life. I watched some of the dash cam and the picture is unwatchable from the shaking. After a few miles I considered turning back but that would be a waste of what I had already traveled, so I kept going. I finally made it. Picture below.

Where are the falls? The picture below was taken from that little shelter out there on the left.

If you look real close you can see some water falling on the lower left. The wind was blowing so hard I was actually getting wet from the spray from those trickles of water. Below is a picture from the Internet of what I was hoping to see.

On the way back I decided to floor it instead of driving slow like I was. The ride was much smoother this way and it only took a few minutes to get out of there. From here it was a fifty mile drive to Winslow, Arizona where I stood on the corner and took several pictures.

Standin' on the Corner Park opened in 1999 commemorating the song "Take It Easy" most famously recorded by the Eagles. The song includes the verse "Well, I'm a-standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona and such a fine sight to see. It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford slowin' down to take a look at me." The park contains a bronze statue of a life-sized man who is standing on a corner with a guitar by his side.

And of course the corner would not be complete without the flatbed Ford.

Below is a final picture from along Route 66 in Winslow a couple blocks up from "The Corner."

I'm spending the night here in Winslow at the Best Western Plus Winslow Inn. I'm only 57 miles east of Flagstaff. At this rate I may not get home until winter. So far I have traveled 5090.5 miles. Very few restaurant choices here in Winslow. I had to get my dinner from the local Sonic.

My adventures will continue tomorrow.
