Hello people,
I slept a little later that usual this morning and enjoyed my beautiful accommodations in Austin. I set out for the day around 10:00am. We had some rain over night but that has cleared out and it's a gorgeous day. My first stop of the day was the LBJ Library here in Austin.
As has been the case with past presidential libraries, the first thing you see when you walk in the door is the limo.
The Great Hall is at the heart of the LBJ Library. It features travertine walls, an engraved presidential seal, a mural, and a spectacular view of four floors of glass-enclosed archives.
I got to walk through my third Oval Office in the period of one week.
The office looks exactly as it did during Johnson's presidency, including the desk he used in his Senate days through the White House years, his books and the three televisions that kept him apprised of the news, and a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who, Johnson said, gave him his great desire for public office.
The rocker was originally used by John F. Kennedy in the White House, and subsequently used by his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson.
Lady Bird Johnson often worked from this office inside the LBJ Presidential Library. Mrs. Johnson gifted her office, as well as its furnishings and sundry accessories for use as a permanent exhibition. The exhibition first opened to the public in 1998 and continues to be a visitor favorite.
I spent about two hours at the library and then moved on. Next on my schedule was a nice long stroll along the Colorado River in downtown Austin.
It was a perfect day to be outdoors. I meandered across the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge.
I climbed Doug Sahm Hill for a nice view of the Austin skyline.
It was now time to leave town. I did make one more stop on my way out at the Austin Mural.
It was only a fifty mile drive to where I am spending the night, Johnson City. This small town is the birthplace of President Johnson. My first stop in town was the Blanco County Courthouse. That's my filthy car in the picture.
I also visited LBJ's boyhood home here in town.
It was at this time I called it a day and checked into my Best Western Motel here in town. Later I got my dinner from Fat Boy Burgers. This was a nice homey little eatery. Food was delicious. While I was inside waiting for my food this family came in and told the lady at the counter that they were from Indianapolis and someone had suggested they eat here. What are the odds that this small restaurant in this small town would have two customers in a row from Indianapolis?
I won't bore you any more for today. Happy birthday to my nephew Jonathan.
Tim
