Hello Everybody,
Today was mostly a travel day although I did make a couple of stops. Much to my surprise the sun was actually peeking through the mostly cloudy sky when I set out this morning. By the time I got to Mount Vernon, only 15 miles west of Evansville, it was a very pretty spring morning. Below is a mural on the side of a downtown building.
I explored the Riverbank Park along the Ohio River.
Just three blocks up Main Street from the park sits the Posey County Courthouse. The sun was peeking through the clouds just right to make it a pretty picture.
The daffodils are in full bloom here in southern Indiana.
I enjoyed my visit to Mount Vernon. It is a pretty little town. About two minutes after leaving Mount Vernon the clouds closed in and it started to rain, as expected. It was about a 300 mile drive to Memphis, Tennessee where I am spending the night. It rained on and off most of the way with the sun rarely peeking through the clouds. My only stop was in Cairo, Illinois. Below is Magnolia Manor in Cairo.
Cairo is a very depressed town. The main street through town is lined with old abandoned buildings. Some are burnt out and look like they have been there for decades.
My main reason for stopping here was to see the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. But like everything else in this town, the state park along the river is abandoned and closed off. Through the trees I could see the bridge across the Ohio River into Kentucky.
And from the same location if you look the other direction you can see the bridge across the Mississippi River into Missouri.
From Cairo it was a boring and gloomy drive into Memphis. My only stop was at a rest area off I-55 for a quick comfort break.
I arrived at my Courtyard hotel near the Memphis airport at around 3:00. I got my dinner tonight from Piccadilly Cafeteria on Elvis Presley Blvd. Boy what a dump that was and the food wasn't any better.
I hope to see Memphis tomorrow if the weather cooperates.
Tim
