FRIDAY, JULY 15, 2011:

My flight from Indianapolis arrived at Washington's Dulles Airport at 7:30am.

It would be ten hours before my flight to Paris was due to depart,
so I rented a car and headed off to Mount Vernon which was was only a 35 mile drive.

Mount Vernon is located near Alexandria, Virginia and was the plantation home of George Washington.
The mansion is built of wood in neoclassical Georgian architectural style on the banks of the Potomac River.
It was a beautiful day for my short visit to Mount Vernon.

The property consists of 500 acres with the main buildings, including the house, located near the riverfront.
After touring the interior of the mansion (no pictures were allowed) I took a walk around the grounds.

After leaving Mount Vernon I had lunch in Manassas and then it was back to Dulles for my 5:30 flight to Paris.

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON JULY 15, 2011
Howdy friends and family,

I am sitting in the United lounge at Dulles Airport waiting for my flight to Paris. I had a ten hour layover here in Washington today, so I rented a car and drove over to Mount Vernon.

No pictures were allowed inside the mansion, so I can't include that. I walked all around the grounds. I deliberately scheduled a long lay-over so I could visit here today.

I visited George & Martha Washington's tomb here at Mount Vernon.

It was a beautiful morning here. Nice cool temps and a nice breeze off the Potomac River.

After leaving George Washington's home I had lunch and then headed back to the airport. My flight leaves at 5:33 which is about 90 minutes away. If all goes according to plan I will be spending the next six weeks in Europe.

I'll write more when I get to Paris,

Tim
