Hello folks,
No sooner did I doze off at the hotel last night than the fire alarms went off. I got downstairs just as all the fire trucks were arriving. The alarm was caused by a plumbing problem on the 3rd floor that flooded several rooms.
This morning I hit the road at 8:00. It was only a 37 mile drive into San Francisco. I drove through Oakland and across the Bay Bridge to get there. The first place I visited was Twin Peaks.
I was here in 2014. While the weather was nice then the Golden Gate Bridge was always fogged in during my stay. That was certainly not a problem today. There was not a cloud in sight.
I decided to "walk" across the bridge with the help of my trusty scooter.
The picture below is looking out into the bay from the center of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Next I drove across the Golden Gate Bridge. I said in an earlier email that I expected the Pacific Ocean to be closed when I got there. Well, that kind of happened. I wanted to visit the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The fog prevented me from visiting in 2014. Today the weather was perfect, and it's Saturday, so they closed the road going up there to all vehicles and only allowed bikes to go in. They said too many people were going up and they often do this.
So I decided to check into my hotel which is just 4 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. After I checked in I decided to go get me an In'N"Out burger. It was only two miles away but took about an hour to get there and back. The freeways are running great on the weekend but all the side streets are parking lots. In'N'Out was packed. My pickup number was #65 and they were serving #30. It didn't take long though, they do a great job. I wish they would come further east.
I hung around the hotel for about three hours waiting for the horrendous traffic to improve. Then a couple hours before sunset I once again tried to get up to the Golden Gate Recreation Area. When I got there the road was still closed. This time I started looking for another way to get in there. I found out the secret to the maze. They turn all the roads into one ways so they can use one of the lanes for parking. Once I figured out the maze (no signs explaining it) I could go where ever I wanted. Below is the Golden Gate Bridge from the Marin Headlands. That is of course the city of San Francisco behind the bridge.
I drove a little further out as the sun was setting. Below is the sun setting out in the Pacific Ocean.
And my final picture of the day is back at the Golden Gate Bridge as the lights are starting to come on in the city.
I wanted to skip dinner as I am trying to eat only once a day so as to not gain weight on this trip. But I couldn't resist stopping by In'N'Out again on my way back to the hotel.
It's almost 11:00 here now, so I better sign off and go to bed. Tomorrow is another day.
