Hello Everyone,
After sitting in my house for almost two years, I was finally able to hit the road again today. I left the house very early this morning. I got to my first stop in Marion, Indiana right at sunrise. My first stop was at James Dean's Birth Site Memorial.
Legendary actor James Dean and his family lived in the House of Seven Gables that stood on this site when Dean was born on February 8, 1931. This timeless memorial honors the star and the many accomplishments he made during his all too short acting career.
Some of you may be experiencing deja vu about now. Just two blocks down the street from this site is the Grant County courthouse.
My final stop in Marion was at Matter Park. A very pretty little park with winding pathways, flowers and fountains.
About twenty miles down the road I came to my next stop in Wabash, Indiana. This is the Wabash County courthouse.
I have taken a liking to visiting the town squares in small towns. Next up was Huntington, Indiana and the Huntington County courthouse.
It was on in to Fort Wayne next. I threw the next picture in for Dan. Have you seen a game in this ball park yet?
Below is the Martin Luther King Bridge over the St. Marys River in Fort Wayne.
Of course I have to include the Allen County courthouse in downtown Fort Wayne.
Below is the new Promenade Park on Fort Wayne's Riverfront.
About twenty miles north of Fort Wayne is the city of Auburn and the Dekalb County courthouse.
Twenty miles north of Auburn is the town of Angola, Indiana. Angola has a very pretty town square.
Angola is the county seat of Steuben County. The courthouse sits on the town square.
In the center of Angola's town square in the Steuben County Soldier's Monument.
Angola brings back fond memories for me. My aunt and uncle owned a lakefront home on Crooked Lake just outside Angola. As kids we used to visit in summer. Below is Crooked Lake.
Below is the Tri-State Marker. This is where the states of Indiana, Ohio and Michigan meet.
Next it was a 64.5 mile drive to Maumee, Ohio where I checked into the Comfort Inn & Suites. This is on the southwest side of Toledo.
I have a comfortable room (#100) that will be my home for the next two nights.
After getting settled I went out and explored Toldedo a bit. The mural below was painted on the side of a building just outside downtown Toledo.
I had a bit a difficulty getting around Toledo. Half the streets in this God-forsaken city are closed due to construction. Below is the Anthony Wayne Bridge over the Maumee River.
Below is the Toledo skyline from across the Maumee River.
The Glass City Riverwalk provides great views of the river and skyline.
The SS Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship was once the largest freighter on the Great Lakes. It currently resides at The National Museum of the Great Lakes.
The Veterans' Glass City Skyway is a cable-stayed bridge that carries Interstate 280 over the Maumee River. It is seen in the picture below rising above the Robert Craig Memorial Bridge.
Sightseeing complete, I picked up some dinner from the local Longhorn Steahouse. I had Parmesan Chicken, Baked Potato and some Spicy Chicken Bites.
Sorry this email isn't too descriptive today. I'm pooped and anxious to finish and get to bed. I will update you on my travels tomorrow.
