MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON OCTOBER 19, 2019
Hello folks,

Today was the first of five days that I will spend driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway. I left my hotel in Winchester just after sunrise this morning. It was a twenty mile drive to Front Royal where I would enter Shenandoah National Park and the Skyline Drive. But before I got to the park I make a quick stop in historic downtown Front Royal, Virginia. {Click HERE to watch my video of Front Royal.}

The northern end of Skyline Drive begins in Front Royal. The mountain top highway winds its way through Shenandoah's nearly 200,000 acres along the spine of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.

In some places the leaves were changing and in other places not so much. In the picture below you can see some yellow and gold. Red and orange was a lot harder to find.

At 10:00 a deer decided to cross my path. Below is a screen grab from the dash cam.

There are 75 scenic overlooks that offer stunning views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west or the rolling Piedmont to the east. I had to be selective as to which overlooks to visit. If I had stopped at every overlook I would still be up there.

The historic 105-mile long Skyline Drive is a National Scenic Byway.

Below I found some of those elusive red and orange colors.

The speed limit is 35 for the entire length of Skyline Drive. The road is very well maintained.

When you leave Shenandoah National Park, Skyline drive ends and the Blue Ridge Parkway begins. The Parkway runs for 469 miles all the way to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is America's longest linear park. Below is a scenic overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I drove the first 65 miles of the Parkway before exiting the Parkway for the day.

I drove 20 miles east of the Parkway to Lynchburg, Virginia where I am spending the night at a Quality Inn. I had dinner tonight at Cook Out. There are a lot of these fast food outlets in the southern states. Their menu is very confusing. The food was good but nothing special.

Blue Ridge Parkway Day Two coming tomorrow, stay tuned!
