Hello everyone,
I hated to check out of my nice hotel this morning. I slept with the windows open and woke up to the sounds of the sea birds. After hitting the road it was about a fifty mile drive to my first stop, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.
The bridge tower on the left is the Penobscot Narrows Observatory. You can take an elevator to the top of that 400 foot high tower. Below is a picture of the narrows from the top of the tower.
Looking out of the other side of the tower you get a nice view of the town of Bucksport, Maine.
Looking straight down you get a nice view of Fort Knox. Named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War. It was built between 1844 and 1869.
Next it was on into Acadia National Park. The first place I stopped was the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.
After the lighthouse I made my way over to the Marina for a three hour boat cruise. I had actully booked this cruise for tomorrow, but the weather is supposed to be awful tomorrow so they let me go today instead. The first thing we sailed by was the Bear Island Lughthouse.
We sailed around the beautiful mountains of Acadia National Park.
The boat stopped at Islesford, a picturesque harbor town on Little Cranberry Island.
We had about a half hour to walk around. I watched someone unloading his catch of lobsters.
On our way back to the dock we once again passed by the Bear Island Lighthouse. It was first established in 1839. The present structure was built in 1889. It was deactivated in 1981 and relit as a private aid to navigation by the Friends of Acadia National Park in 1989.
After the cruise I drove to my fleebag hotel in Bar Harbor. I now remember why I don't stay at Days Inns. This place is a dump. I think I have finally killed the fly that has been crawling on me since I arrived. I tried to go out to dinner tonight. There are no chain restaurants in town, which is fine. But all the local restaurants are in the resort area around the harbor. Skinny little streets and no parking at all. I came back to the hotel and had a pizza delivered. Luckily the local pizza place makes a pretty good pie.
I was supposed to spend two nights in this dump, but no way I am spending another night here. There isn't even a desk or table in this room. I had to put the lamp on the floor so I could use the night stand as a desk. Hopefully I will be able to see the rest of Acadia tomorrow before I leave but the forecast does not look good.
More later,
Tim
