SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 2011:

We docked in Stockholm, Sweden at 7:30 on Sunday morning.
Stockholm is the capital and the largest city of Sweden and constitutes the most populated urban area in Scandinavia.
Stockholm is the most populous city in Sweden, with a population over 850,000.

As we were docking we got a nice view of Skeppsbron which is both a street and a quay in Gamla stan, the old town.

The first place I visited on my tour of Stockholm was the Vasa Museum.
This maritime museum displays the only almost fully intact 17th century ship that has ever been salvaged,
the 64-gun warship Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in 1628.
The Vasa Museum opened in 1990 and is the most visited museum in Scandinavia.

Next we took a walking tour around Stockholm's Old Town.
We passed the Church of St. Nicholas, most commonly known as Storkyrkan (The Great Church),
it is the oldest church in Gamla Stan and is situated next to the Royal Palace.
Our walk continued through Stortorget (Swedish: The Big Square). It is the oldest square in Stockholm.

We concluded our walk where it began at the Stockholm Palace.
The Stockholm Palace is the official residence and major royal palace of the Swedish monarch.
The offices of the monarch and the other members of the Swedish Royal Family as well as the offices
of the Royal Court of Sweden are located there. The palace is used for representative purposes by
the King whilst performing his duties as the head of state.

We concluded our tour at Stockholm City Hall. It stands on the eastern tip of Kungsholmen island,
next to Riddarfjrden's northern shore and facing the islands of Riddarholmen and Sdermalm.
It is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet and one of Stockholm's major tourist attractions.
The Blue Hall is known as the dining hall used for the banquet held after the annual Nobel Prize award ceremony.

Got a nice view from the steps of City Hall as we were leaving in the pouring rain.
It was a short call in Stockholm, we sailed away at 2:00.
Tomorrow would be a sea day and the final day of the cruise.

As was the case yesterday, it was beautiful weather when we arrived but raining by the time we left. The picture below was taken from the ship this morning.

The first place we visited this morning was the Vasa Museum.

The Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden

This old Viking war ship sat on the bottom of the harbor here in Stockholm for over 300 years. In the 1990s they raised the ship. They spent about a decade washing it off and then they built a museum around it. It was very interesting.

We took a walking tour of old town next.

Yesterday I said that I was not all that fond of Helsinki. I did not find that the case here. This city has a lot more character and charm.

Below is the Royal Palace.

If you remember the pictures from Oslo last week. I showed the Oslo City Hall where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded. The Nobel banquet is held at the Stockholm City Hall. Below is the Blue Hall of the City Hall where the banquet is held.

That was all there was time to see. It was a very short call here in Stockholm. We were back on the ship at noon. This was the last port on the cruise. We are now sailing back to Copenhagen. We do have a sea day tomorrow before disembarking the ship on Tuesday morning. I'm going to spend a couple days in Copenhagen after the cruise.
