SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2009:

I began my vacation by flying to Atlanta, Georgia.
This was the first time that I had used the new Indianapolis midfield terminal.

I arrived in Atlanta, Georgia at around 10:30 A.M.
That gave me about 8 hours before I had to be back at the airport for my flight to Rio.
It was a beautiful day in Atlanta.
I drove to downtown and took in the view from the top of the Westin Peachtree Hotel.
It is the second-tallest all-hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere at 73 stories tall.

After leaving downtown Atlanta I had some lunch and then headed out to Stone Mountain.
Stone Mountain is a granite dome monadnock east of Atlanta. At its summit the elevation is 1,686 feet.
I rode the skylift to the top of the mountain and then walked all around the rock admiring the view.

Three figures of the Confederate States of America are carved here: Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis.

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON FEBRUARY 8, 2009
Hello Everyone!

It is vacation time again. I flew out of Indianapolis this morning bound for South America. But I spent the day in Atlanta as I had a ten hour layover between flights. It was a beautiful day in Atlanta, near 70 and mostly sunny. I began by driving to downtown. I went to the top of the Westin Peachtree Hotel. This used to be the tallest hotel in the world. The attached picture is of downtown Atlanta from the 72nd floor of the hotel.

I wandered around downtown a bit and then went to lunch. I spent the rest of the afternoon at Stone Mountain just outside Atlanta. Stone Mountain is a large granite rock which is 1686 feet high. There is a carving of confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson in the face of the mountain. I rode the tramway to the top of the mountain and walked all around the rock. I didn't realize how far down I had walked until it was time to go back up. It was a rather steep and long climb back to the tram. I thought I might start the trip with a heart attack before I got back to the top.

After leaving Stone Mountain it was back to the airport for my ten hour flight to Rio.

More tomorrow from South America,

Tim
