Hello Everybody,
My cruise is over. I had a great time on the cruise. Friday was basically a sea day. We did sail through the College Fjord late in the afternoon which is the picture below.
Early Friday evening while I was in the Princess Theater we arrived in Whittier (below). I was given some false information prior to the cruise. I was told that we got off the ship on Friday night when we docked in Whittier when in reality we didn't disembark until Saturday morning. So I ended up paying for a hotel room in Anchorage that I didn't use Friday night.
Saturday morning I had a Princess transfer to the Anchorage Airport where I picked up the rental car you see below.
I am staying at the Millennium Hotel on Lake Hood which is the float plane base at the Anchorage Airport. Which will come in handy for what I plan on doing the next few days.
I also missed the tour I had booked for today due to being told the wrong disembarkation time. That left me without anything to do today. I spent the day wandering about the city and went to a movie. It was misting rain most of the day. Below is the Anchorage skyline from Earthquake Park.
Below is the Eisenhower Alaska Statehood Monument.
Anchorage is Alaska's most populous city with a population around 250,000 people.
Due to its location on the globe, being almost equidistant from New York City, Tokyo, and Berlin, Anchorage lies within 9 hours by air to nearly 90% of the industrialized world. For this reason, the Anchorage International Airport is a common refueling stop for many international flights and is home to a major FedEx Hub. Hence the sign below declaring Anchorage as the "air crossroads of the world."
Anchorage has a subarctic climate but with strong maritime influences that lead to a relatively moderate climate. Most of its precipitation falls in late summer. Average daytime summer temperatures range from approximately 55 to 78 Fahrenheit.
Anchorage is located in Southcentral Alaska. At 61 degrees north, it lies slightly farther north than Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and Saint Petersburg, but not as far north as Reykjavik. Flowers grow large in Alaska with nearly 24 hours of sunlight in summer.
More Later,
Tim
