16-year network run on Saturday nights, and became
one of the major musical success stories in all of
TV history. ABC finally cancelled the show in 1971,
primarily because his audience was "too old," not too
small. Welk then assembled a syndicated network of
his own and continued to produce new programs
for another eleven years.
The Welk formula was good, old-fashioned, melodic
music unadorned and straightforwardly presented.
Much of the appeal of the program lay with its
close-knit family of performers.
