SATURDAY, JULY 30, 2011:

It was a beautiful morning as we sailed up the fjord into Oslo, Norway.
The ship docked right in downtown Oslo next to Akershus Fortress.
Akershus Fortress is a medieval castle that was built to protect Norway's Capital city.

The Oslo harbor is one of Oslo's great attractions. Situated on the Oslo Fjord,
the harbor area is a popular destination for both tourists and residents.
The Nobel Peace Center, the Town Hall and the castle are located around the harbor.

After disembarking the ship I took a walking tour around the city.
Our first stop was at Oslo City Hall, just a few steps away from the ship.
Its characteristic architecture, artworks and the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony,
held here every December 10th, make it one of Oslo's most famous buildings.

We passed by Oslo's National Theater and the Square of June 7.
It was originally named Triangelplassen ('The Triangle Square'), but was renamed in 1962 after June 7, 1905,
the day when the Union between Sweden and Norway was declared dissolved by the Norwegian government.

The Royal Palace was built in the first half of the 19th century as the Norwegian residence of
Norwegian and Swedish king Charles III and is the official residence of the present Norwegian Monarch.
We arrived at the 173 room palace as the guard was arriving for the changing ceremony.

Our walk continued through downtown as we passed the university, Parliament Building and Old Tow Hall.

The Scandinavian Star Memorial commemorates the tragic 1971 passenger ferry accident that killed 158 people.
The Oslo Opera House is the home of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and the National Opera Theatre.
The building is situated at the head of the Oslofjord. The angled exterior surfaces of the building are covered with
Italian marble and white granite and make it appear to rise from the water.

After finishing the walking tour I ventured a little further out into the city.
My first stop was at the Vigeland Sculpture Park.

Vigeland Sculpture Park covers 80 acres and features 212 bronze and granite sculptures all designed by
Gustav Vigeland. In 1940 the Bridge was the first part of the Sculpture Park to be opened to the public.
58 of the park's sculptures reside along the Bridge.
All are clad in bronze and contribute to the Human Condition theme of the park.

MY DAILY EMAIL SENT ON JULY 30, 2011
Norwegian greetings,

I've been battling the weather most every day of the trip so far, but today the sun shined all day in the most unlikely place, Norway. It rains over 300 days a year here. We sailed up Oslo Fjord this morning.

The harbor of Oslo, Norway

We docked just before 10:00 this morning right in downtown Oslo.

The Emerald Princess arriving in Oslo, Norway

The first thing I did after arrival was take a walking tour of downtown Oslo.

Below is the Royal Palace. The soldiers for the changing of the guard ceremony marched right past us as we were walking around the palace.

Our walking tour concluded at the Parliament Building.

This afternoon I took a bus tour to some places a little farther out in the city. We passed the brand new opera house on the way. You can actually walk from ground level up and onto the roof of the building.

Our first stop was at Vigeland Sculpture Park.

There were a lot of people in the park enjoying the unusually great weather. The tour guide said this was the nicest day of the year so far.

Next we journeyed out to the huge Nordic ski jump. The photo below is not the best angle of it. It's amazing how steep it is. I can't image skiing down it.

The picture below is Akerhus Castle and was taken from the ship right before we sailed away.

We sailed away at 7:00 and we're now heading back to Denmark.

The Emerald Princess in Northern Denmark

We had a beautiful sunset here in the fjords of Norway or Denmark. Oslo is on the southern tip of Norway, so we're probably back in Denmark waters. The picture below was taken just before 10:00 tonight.

As I am writing this it is after 11:30 and it's still not completely dark.
