The Hubbards and the Buells had been neighbors in
suburban Los Angeles for 15 years. Herb Hubbard was a
successful lawyer and a member of the board of trustees
of his alma mater. His wife, Eve, was a great cook,
former champion golfer, terrific gardener, and supporter
of all the right causes. They were very straight.
The Buells, on the other hand, were extremely unconventional.
Roger Buell was a television writer who did most of his
work at home and would test his scripts on anyone who
happened to be available as a sounding board. His wife,
Kaye, was not a particularly enthuiastic housekeeper and
rather overbearing on occasion.
Despite their differences, the Hubbards and the Buells were the
best of friends and their children had gotten married to each other.
The children, Jerry and Susie, were both in college and had
to cope with in-laws who had very different
ideas on how they should live.
