Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss makes his
television drama series debut as a college history
professor whose life is at a crossroads when, among
other things, he is passed over for a long-overdue
promotion at the all-women's college where he teaches.
The job is given instead to new faculty member, Andrea
Haskell, a former student and ex-lover, who has now
surpassed her mentor in academic achievement. To make
matters worse, his old friend Judith Hackett Bryant,
president of the college, has endorsed this decision.
Making things even more challenging is the fact
that Max's best friend, Steve, has returned
as Erica after a sex-change operation.

These days, Max's joy comes from spending time with
his 11-year-old son, Lester, an aspiring basketball
star. More challenging is his relationship with his
teenage daughter Nell, a freshman at the college.
Now, Max is reexamining everything in his life.

Taking a much-needed inventory of his life, Max
looks around and sees that he has been working
forever, and for what? A widower surrounded by
women at an all-female institution, struggling to
parent a headstrong 18-year-old daughter and an
overly wise 11-year-old son. Max realizes that
he's an old-fashioned man in a modern world
and that something has to change.
But he'll be damned if it's him.
