Marla Gibbs, who played the insolent, wisecracking housekeeper
on The Jeffersons for ten years, brought a somewaht toned-down
variation of the character to this popular comedy about family
life in a black neighborhood of Washignton, D.C. Mary and her
best friend, Rose, the landlandy, liked to sit on the stoop of
the apartment building (No. 227) and gossip about many things,
especially the building's resident tramp, Sandra, who had the
figure and mannerisms of a modern Mae West. While Sandra
wiggled around in her tight dresses, Mary's daughter, Brenda,
was just beginning to struggle with the pains of adolscence,
her number-one pain being gangly boyfriend Calvin. Lester was
Mary's level-headed husband, a small-time contractor, and
Pearl a crochety old busybody (and Calvin's grandmother)
who often leaned out her window to join in the
front-stoop conversations.
